Paul Clout Design is a private residential building design practice. The work is undertaken by commission, one residence at a time.
We accept a small number of commissions each year. Each is treated as a complete work — from siting and building design through interior, furnishing and finish — and handled with the discretion appropriate to a private home.

Lifestyle Design
Our signature discipline. Forty years on, it describes a method rather than a style: the end-to-end design of a residence — its building design, its interior, and the rhythms of how a house is actually lived in. Light, sound, threshold, sequence, gathering, retreat. Every detail is in service of how a home is lived in.
Building Design & Documentation
From siting and form to the complete set of drawings required to build. We resolve plans, elevations and construction detail, and coordinate the surveyors, engineers and specialist consultants a residence requires.
Interior Design
Considered to the finest detail — the selection or design of joinery, furniture, lighting, fittings and finishes, and the longer conversation about how each room is meant to feel.
Construction Supervision
Through the build, the practice remains involved to protect the integrity of the design — working alongside your chosen builder so the finished residence is true to what was drawn.
Process
How a Commission Unfolds
Within building design and documentation, the work moves through a clear sequence — each stage resolved thoroughly before the residence reaches site.
Concept Design
We begin with the brief and the site — its conditions, opportunities and constraints — and develop preliminary layouts and a concept that considers construction and material. Presented with detailed visuals, so the residence can be seen before it is built.
Council Drawings
The full documentation required for approval: site plans, floor plans, elevations, sections, roof plans and schedules, with the construction detail authorities require. Throughout, we coordinate the specialist consultants the project needs.
Building Tender Drawings
The complete construction set — drawings, electrical and lighting layouts, joinery and cabinetry, and a full schedule of finishes — giving the builder everything required to price and construct the residence accurately.
Construction supervision then continues the relationship into the build, as a dedicated stage.
Commissions
Where We Work
Private Residences
The heart of the practice. We design private homes for families who value stillness, craft and a considered regard for place — each a complete, one-of-one work.
Multi-Residential
We bring the same considered approach to a small number of multi-residential commissions, designing homes and shared spaces with the care of a private house.
Multi-residential commissions are delivered in association with a registered architect, who leads and certifies the building works. Paul Clout Design is a building design practice, not an architectural firm.
Hospitality
We undertake selected hospitality commissions — hotels, restaurants and destinations — where the brief calls for the same depth of design as a private residence.
As with multi-residential work, hospitality commissions are delivered in association with a registered architect, who certifies the building works.
